A recently published study suggests that iron overload increases susceptibility to liver abscess due to type of bacteria known as Y. enterocolitica.

Y. enterocolitica is an iron-dependent bacteria that relies entirely on iron for growth. Iron overload must be suspected in patients with liver abscesses due to Y. enterocolitica.

We believe that a liver abscess due to these bacteria should be considered a red flag that warns clinicians to evaluate more thoroughly laboratory tests on iron.
